Postcard: Illinois Terminal Streetcar
near Illinois Central Station,
Champaign, IL. |
| Date |
: |
Undated. c. 1930 |
| Description |
: |
A Curteich white border postcard from
the late 1920s or early 1930s show a
streetcar passing the Illinois Central
Station. This is a highly stylized card
as is evident from the fact that the
artist removed the overhead traction
wires which would have been in the
original photo from which this card was
made. Illinois Terminal/Illinois Light
& Power owned the streetcar lines in
Champaign/Urbana. They owned the lines
until ordered by the federal government
to separate in the middle 1930s.
Streetcar service ended in Champaign/
Urbana on November 10, 1936 when
National City Lines converted all
streetcar lines to buses. The card
was published by the Champaign & Urbana
News Agency of Champaign. The card
number is 100241. Special thanks to
H. George Friedman for the information
on the streetcar service in Champaign.
